Program description

The Water Resources Science (WRS) Program offers the following degrees:

Students can earn interdisciplinary master’s and doctoral degrees in water resources in one of three emphases:
• Water Resources Science
• Water Resources Science Limnology and Oceanography Track

The PhD in Water Resources Science consists of:
- Coursework equivalent to an M.S. in WRS
• Four required core courses (one each from Hydrology, Environmental Chemistry, Limnology, and Water Policy)
• One elective in the area of water quality
• Generally two or more WRS elective courses in an Area of Emphasis
- Registration for the WRS Seminar Series (WRS 8100) during the first semester in residence.

- Training in Ethics and Responsible Conduct of Research

- Supporting Program
Ph.D. students also require an appropriate supporting program or minor, thus students must take at least twelve semester credits of course work outside the WRS major. In certain cases, it may be desirable to have a supporting program course from the WRS related field list, but the course must represent a distinctly different area.

- WRS Thesis Credits Policy
Students may register for doctoral dissertation credits after:
1. Completing one year of coursework;
2. Filing an approved Graduate Degree Plan;
3. Meeting with their advisory committee, and having the committee review and approve a 1-2 page thesis proposal outline/summary. This approval will require the consent of 4 of 5 committee members. If not approved, the committee should provide concrete guidance on what the student needs to accomplish and by when to meet the requirements for taking dissertation credits. Approval should be transmitted by the advisor to the DGS in writing.
Effective: Spring semester 2012.

The PhD in Water Resources Science Limnology and Oceanography Track consists of:

- Coursework equivalent to an M.S. in the Water Resources Science Limnology and Oceanography Track

• One Water Quality Elective
• Limnology and Oceanography Track Electives
- Registration for the WRS Seminar Series (WRS 8100) during the first semester in residence.
