Program description

Meet the challenges of sustainable production and global change:

The MSc Eng in Aquatic Science and Technology focuses on fisheries, aquaculture, oceanography and management of aquatic resources. The programme addresses the challenges associated with sustainable aquaculture and capture based production of fish and shellfish, small and large scale environmental change and the conservation of aquatic ecosystems.

Our mission is to provide you with the knowledge you need to make a significant contribution to meet the global challenges in technological innovation and management of aquaculture, fisheries and ocean science.

Specialize in aquaculture, fisheries or oceanography:

As an MSc Eng in Aquatic Science and Technology you can choose to specialize in Aquaculture, Fisheries or Oceanography. All specializations include a common interdisciplinary basis of biology, mathematics, and physics, with an emphasis on management of aquatic resources.

In the Aquaculture specialization, it is possible to focus on recirculation technology from design and function of individual components and processes to turn-key facilities that produce fish on land with the highest possible degree of water re-use and lowest environmental impact.

The Fisheries specialization combines fish biology, stock assessment, fishing technology, monitoring, and modelling in order to provide you with the necessary knowledge to contribute to sustainable management of aquatic fish and shellfish resources.

The Oceanography specialization combines biology with physics, chemistry and mathematics, educating engineers who have a solid knowledge base of interdisciplinary oceanography and can combine ocean observations with predictions.

Choose to use your qualifications in management:
Are you planning a career in qualitative and quantitative advisory tasks? With the right planning in your choice of courses in the Aquatic Science and Technology programme you will obtain unique competencies within biological, chemical and physical interactions in aquatic environments. These are highly sought after qualifications in jobs where management and assessment of aquatic resources and ecosystems are in focus.

Sustainable aquatic resources:
Two thirds of the Earth is covered by water. Oceans, lakes and rivers are crucial for regulating earth’s biogeography and climate, as well as for conserving biodiversity.

Furthermore, a large part of the human population depends on fisheries or aquaculture for their daily nutrition and income.

It is becoming increasingly important to utilize marine and freshwater ecosystems in a sustainable way to reduce environmental impacts from human activities, maintain ecosystem biodiversity and function, and to develop green technologies for aquatic food production.
