Overview
The Cranfield Water Science Institute, in collaboration with Severn Trent Water, has 2 MSc by Research studentship opportunities for motivated graduates to evaluate the performances of various advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) technologies for pesticide removal from water sources used for drinking.

Many UK water companies are facing some big challenges associated with treating the pesticide metaldehyde - heavily used in agriculture to control slugs and snails. Severn Trent Water have identified AOPs as a viable way of removing metaldehyde and will be running a large-scale pilot demonstration trial at one of their water treatment works sites to identify the most economically viable technology to treat metaldehyde.

Initially, the candidates will spend four months on site to support the AOP pilot plants and take samples as required. The second phase of the project will be lab-based and will be undertaken in Cranfield’s state of the art facilities, where you will look at:
• The impact of AOPs on disinfection by-product formation potential
• The mechanism of oxidation of different AOP technologies, by identifying oxidation by-products using state of the art analytical equipment.
