Scholarship description

Applications are invited for a MSc research assistantship in flood inundation modelling at Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), University of Malaya (UM), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The research project will use theoretical and numerical methods to study the impacts of climate change and extreme events on flood risks. A case study of a river (e.g. Kelantan River) at the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia will be conducted.


Requirements:

• The student should possess a strong background in fluid mechanics, hydrology, river hydraulics and hydrodynamics, flood risk or closely related fields.
• The candidate should preferably be familiar with hydrological and hydrodynamic model (e.g. Flood Modeller), have knowledge of numerical modelling, quantitative data assessment, statistical methods and GIS.
• The student should have a first-class or good second-upper-class honours degree in civil/environmental engineering, physics, mathematics or closely related disciplines.
• Able to write research papers in English.
• Capacity to think and work independently and in a diverse group of scientists and engineers.


The successful candidate will be based at IOES (http://www.ioes.um.edu.my) which is one of the 14 Higher Institution Centres of Excellence (HICoE) in Malaysia. The responsibilities of a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) include writing and publishing scientific results which will lead ultimately to a dissertation.
