At Monash, we pursue research that promises to change the world and know that people from all walks of life have good ideas. That’s why we do our best to encourage all potential research students to join us.

It’s also why we offer an extensive range of scholarships and grants that not only reward academic excellence, but allow students from many backgrounds to study at our world-class university.

The Australian Government ’s Research Training Scheme covers your research course fees if you’re an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident.

If you’re an international student, you can apply for several course-fee scholarships, but they are highly sought-after, so expect some tough competition.

Many other scholarships and grants are available to domestic and international students to help with basic living expenses and other costs.

Our awards are organised into five main areas:

Major Monash-wide scholarships, which help with basic living costs, including for international students
Other Monash-wide scholarships, which address the special needs of students who are Indigenous or have a disability or family duties that have disrupted study
Scholarships for international students, which include course-fee and other support for international students in general and students from Chile, China, India and elsewhere in particular
Other scholarship opportunities, which include scholarships to research overseas
Grants and recognition, which include grants for travel and preparing publications for research students whose theses are under examination.

You usually apply for a scholarship when applying for a research degree, so make sure you check your eligibility for both a course and a scholarship before applying.

What happens if your application is not successful?

A university of our standing attracts a lot of interest from research students, and our scholarships are in great demand. If you were unlucky in your first application, don't worry – you have other options.

Coursework scholarships

The Monash University Institute of Graduate Research (MIGR) only handles scholarships for postgraduate research degrees, but being a researcher is not your only postgraduate study option. Monash University offers over 2000 scholarships and bursaries for coursework programs, designed to encourage and reward academic excellence and ensure equitable access to education.
