Scholarship description

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University International Postgraduate Scholarships for PhD Studies

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University International Postgraduate Scholarships for PhD Studies will be awarded to academically strong applicants who can contribute to the internationalisation of PolyU and bring cultural diversity to the University.

Subject to satisfactory progress in students' studies, the scholarship granting period will coincide with that of the tuition fee charging period. Scholarships are not for offsetting fee for extension of registration.

Teaching Postgraduate Studentship (TPS) Scheme

Main objectives of the Scheme

The main objectives of the Teaching Postgraduate Studentship (TPS) Scheme are:

1.1 to grant, on merit basis, stipends to eligible full-time research postgraduate (RPg) students as a means of financial support to allow them to fully focus on their studies; and

1.2 to provide more teaching experience and training opportunity to interested RPg students in order to widen their exposure for the development of their academic career

Duration and Amount of the TPS

2.1 TPS will normally be offered on a semester basis. A TPS stipend will normally commence on the day the semester concerned begins and end on the day the semester ends. When appropriate, TPS can also be granted for a full academic year.

2.2 TPS awarded to a particular student can be extended to subsequent semesters within his/her normal period of study at the University, subject to good study and work performance, and availability of funds.

2.3 The amount of the TPS stipend to be offered currently is HK$15,000 per month. Partial appointment at 50% of the stipend (i.e., HK$7,500 for 8.5 hours of work per week) is permissible if deemed appropriate by the department and approved by the respective Faculty Dean/School Board Chair.
Duties to be undertaken by TPS Recipients

3.1 Selected students for receiving the TPS are offered an appointment as part-time Teaching Assistants at the University on terms and conditions in accordance with the University’s policies on part-time appointment.

3.2 TPS recipients are required to provide 17 hours of teaching or administrative support work per week in an academic department, as assigned by the relevant Department Head or the supervising subject leader/teacher. The duties undertaken by a TPS recipient normally include:

a) assistance with running of tutorials/seminars/workshops, and/or supervision of laboratory or practical work;

b) assistance with grading of tests, assignments and examination papers;

c) assistance with preparation of material and resources for supporting teaching and learning;

d) assistance with invigilation of University degree examinations; and

e) assistance with other teaching and administrative duties, as deemed appropriate by the department.
