Job description

The Associate Research Specialist (Marine Technician) will be responsible for planning, collection, preservation and archiving of samples and data from the field, including travel and work aboard research vessels and watercraft; in charge of ordering supplies and equipment, keeping stock of inventory, and managing analytical equipment; responsible for sample management and chain of custody, quality control of instruments, data management, and reporting and communicating with Principal Investigators, students, technicians, ship’s crew and other scientists; operation and maintenance of components of the Great Lakes Observing System; maintaining, calibrating and deploying a wide range of field gear and sampling systems.

a) Project Management: Support research using a diverse variety of operations and methods in the study freshwater science and maintain a close relationship with collaborating scientists.

b) Specific Research Work: Organize, deploy and conduct sampling and sampling systems in freshwater environments, including aboard research vessels and watercraft, including on the Great Lakes in all season; carry out analytical methods demanding high precision and accuracy; maintain databases and perform analysis of large data sets; synthesize data in graphic and other forms for publication and dissemination; serve as principal marine technician for the SFS Great Lakes Observing System platforms and systems.

c) Lab Management: Manage general laboratory activities including documentation of samples, data management, organizations and recording of data, samples database management, ordering of supplies, and oversight of lab safety. Supervision and training of student help, students, faculty, and scientists of the School of Freshwater Sciences

d) Set up, maintenance and calibration of equipment, sensors and system components employed in analysis of environmental samples

e) Coordinating payments/ordering/billing with accounting personnel in SFS and maintaining adequate records.

Minimum Qualifications
•A Bachelors degree in biology, chemistry, geoscience or ecology/environmental science or related field.
•A minimum of two years of laboratory and/or field experience using a variety of analytical techniques.
•Experience in laboratory management and quality control procedures including chain of custody.
•Proficiency in working with computer programs including Excel, other database programs, and graphics software
•Demonstrated ability to multitask.
•Evidence of strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications
•At sea experience aboard research vessels on the Great Lakes or oceans
•Experience in analysis of short-lived radionuclides and stable isotopes.
•Knowledge of analytical methods and programs in general.
•Experience in GIS and data visualization.
•Graphics design experience
