Job description

The successful candidate will work on a recently awarded research grant to develop indicators that measure the resilience of WASH to climate change, working with a range of colleagues across Bristol and with collaborators in Nepal, Ethiopia and at the University of North Carolina, USA. This work will also link to ongoing work by the World Health Organization, UNICEF, Gates Foundation and DFID, offering the successful candidate an opportunity to develop new networks. The successful candidate will also work with the upcoming Lancet Commission on WASH, which is being launched in October 2019.

The WASH and environmental health Research Associate will help shape a new research portfolio for the University of Bristol, with scope to develop new research ideas and contribute to the development of new research proposals. Areas that may be a focus include WASH services and water security, public health threats from natural and anthropogenic pollutants in water, environmental health risks in natural and man-made disasters and tackling anti-microbial resistance. In developing new research ideas, there is scope to work with multiple disciplines across the University. This includes the Cabot Institute for the Environment, the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute (health), the JGI (data science), the Bristol Poverty Institute and the Water Group in Civil Engineering.

This is an exciting and challenging new role. You will have a PhD in Engineering, Environmental Health or Environmental Sciences (either completed or close to completion) or equivalent industrial experience. You will have experience of research or working in low- and middle-income countries, strong quantitative analytical skills and experience of statistical analysis of complex data sets and an appreciation of critical emerging issues in WASH and environmental health.

The post is being offered on a full-time basis on an open-ended contract with fixed funding for up to 12 months. It is anticipated that interviews will be held shortly after the closing date and candidates should ideally be able to start early December 2019.
