Summary
There is a major drive within the wood coatings industry to reduce the volatile organic compounds levels in solvent based formulations. Currently, more sustainable water-based alternatives lead to less aesthetically pleasing coatings due to a phenomenon called ‘grain raising’.

Funding covers tuition fees and annual maintenance payments of £14,777 for eligible UK and EU applicants. EU nationals must have lived in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the programme to be eligible for a full award (fees and stipend).
CASE funded project by AkzoNobel (Wood Coatings); successful applicants may be eligible for £8,000 per year top up. PhD duration is 3.5 years, proposed start date is September 2019.
Applicants should have or expect to achieve at least a 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a discipline relevant to materials chemistry.
