Working under the supervision of the Professor Bharathram Ganapathisubramani in a range of projects that includes conducting experiments in the University of Southampton’s wind and water tunnel facilities using state-of-the-art laser diagnostics. There will also be opportunities to supervise graduate students and to get involved in other projects in experimental fluid mechanics including turbulent boundary layers, flow control, atmospheric flows, and diagnostics development. Your area of primary research will be aimed at developing fundamental understanding of turbulent flows relevant to different practical applications. Current projects on offer include,

Turbulent boundary layer flow over rough, porous and compliant surfaces
Aerodynamics of flow over stalled airfoils
Fluid-structure interactions of membrane/flexible wings
Vortex-wake interactions in flapping wings/foils
Data-assimilation/Machine-learning methods applied to above physical problems to improve modelling strategies.
You will have the opportunity to design new experiments in state-of-the-art wind tunnels and water flumes, record and analyse high-fidelity experimental data acquired using advanced flow diagnostic methods. Our labs are moving to brand new facilities and you will be in a unique position of coordinating part of these efforts.

It is essential you have or are close to completing a PhD* in Experimental fluid mechanics where analysis of data is a strong component in addition to acquisition of different datasets. Experience and knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication of models is desirable. Strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications and presentations, are essential.

Equality, diversity and Inclusion is central to the ethos in the School of Engineering. In recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science we were awarded an Athena SWAN bronze in 2013 and 2016.
