Summary

The School of Computing Science has two positions open for which we invite applications:
- A position with a fixed end date of 31 July 2023, the end date of the EPSRC funding for the project. The appointment can be full-time or part time with a minimum of 80%.
- A position of 6 months full time or up to 1 year half time, with any other part-time ratio pro rata. This position must also end before 31 July 2023 but the starting date is flexible.
For both positions, all the project work can be undertaken entirely remotely. Some School-related duties may require presence on campus.
For both positions, project work that doesn’t require synchronous interaction with the project partners and others can be done flexibly. The PI actively promotes a healthy work-life balance. For more information see the University’s Health & Wellbeing guidance and Flexible Working policy.

Job description

The purpose of both positions is to make a leading contribution to a the EPSRC Border Patrol project and the AppControl sister project, on Type-driven Digital Security by Design for mission-critical systems on chip, working with Prof. Wim Vanderbauwhede at the University of Glasgow (PI) and project partners at Imperial College London, University of Essex and Heriot-Watt.
These exciting projects aim to make control systems for critical infrastructure more secure and reliable, for example power stations, water treatment, electricity substations and core internet systems. Border Patrol focuses on hardware (System-on-Chip); AppControl on software (embedded processors).

The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the writing and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of research in accordance with the project deliverables.
2. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.
3. Establishing and sustain a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.
4. Present work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.
5. Take the initiative in the identification of potential funding sources and assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.
6. Develop and maintain collaborations with colleagues across the research group/School/College/University and wider community (e.g. Academic and Industrial Partners).
7. Engage in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and School research group activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School/College.
8. Participate in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
9. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.
10. Make a contribution to Teaching activities (e.g. supervision etc.) and associated admin as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with the Principal Investigator.
11. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
12. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.
13. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing The World.

Qualifications
Essential - Assessed at application stage
A1 Hold a PhD (equivalent to Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12) or alternatively possess the equivalent expertise and experience (e.g. gained in industrial R&D)..

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential - Assessed at application stage, interview and presentation.
C1 Demonstrated ability to undertake independent research as evidenced by identification of project objectives from assessment of the literature, design & analysis of experiments & drafting of papers.
C2 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely, collaborative and efficient manner.
C3 A track record of presentation and publication of research results in international journals/conferences.
C4 Demonstrated interpersonal skills such as communication teamworking, relationship building and emotional intelligence.
C5 Meet at least one of the desirable criteria.

Desirable - Assessed during the presentation
Knowledge of and/or experience with:
D1 Functional programming in a strictly typed pure language e.g. Haskell, Idris or Agda
D2 Dependent types and session types
D3 POSIX-style operating system kernels, esp. the kernel API for interacting with user space
D4 Compiler construction and programming language design for functional languages
