Job description

The Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona (UA) is seeking 3 motivated postdoctoral scholars in hydrology and atmospheric sciences. As part of the effort, the successful candidates will work with a team of investigators from the University of Arizona, other universities, and/or federal agencies to improve hydrologic models and forecasting, as well as the coupling of land surface and atmospheric models to support Earth System Predictions. They would be joining a team that includes a broad range of expertise in land-surface and atmospheric modeling, the use of in situ and remote sensing observations for hydrologic analysis and modeling, downscaling, and data sciences. The research efforts will enable improved hydrologic modelling that can be critical for various applications such as flood, heatwave, and/or flash-drought forecasting. As part of this effort we expect to downscale hydrologic inputs/outputs using advanced techniques that may include machine learning to develop high-resolution hydrometeorological data products. We also welcome strong and motivated candidates who are interested in snow hydrology and efforts to improve hydrologic modeling of snow/frozen soil and/or development/evaluation of high-resolution snow products. We note that there will also be flexibility in the type of research, determined based on the strengths and experience of the candidates.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Strong background in hydrologic and/or atmospheric modeling and/or land-atmosphere model coupling
Proficient in computer programing (e.g., Matlab, Python, R, Fortran, C) and good knowledge of GIS
Strong record of publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals
Good knowledge in using Machine Learning techniques
Ability to work on more than one project
Ability to perform high-quality work both individually and as part of a team

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in hydrometeorology, hydrology, atmospheric science, civil engineering, or related fields. The selected candidate must have a conferred Ph.D. upon hire
Experience in downscaling hydrologic and atmospheric variables
Previous experience in working with in situ and remote sensing data sets to evaluate models and/or to produce downscaled forcing data for modeling use
Research experience in snow hydrology (modeling, product evaluation, etc.)
Experience in writing proposals for funding agencies is preferred, but not required
Experience in handling large data sets and/or high-performance computing
Experience in working with remote sensing, reanalysis, and model data
