Job description

About the role

Essex & Suffolk Water supplies customers with drinking water in the most challenging circumstances in the UK. With the lowest rainfall and highest evapotranspiration rates anywhere in the country, we pride ourselves on our ability to manage our precious water resources carefully, providing a reliable source of water to our customers while striving to maintain the highest environmental standards in our rivers.

As our technical hydrologist, you will become part of, and play a key role in, this dynamic water resources team, being responsible for reporting on the company’s current and forecast water resources, assessing inter-regional water transfer requirements in consultation with the Environment Agency, being involved in developing and assessing new water resources options, and statutory water resources reporting, as well as providing hydrological insight and analysis into various environmental projects. As such, you will gain unparalleled experience as a water resources hydrologist in the most water-stressed part of the UK.

A technical and analytical role, you’ll develop and maintain water resource system models (we pioneered the use of Aquator® in Britain) and use modelling tools to produce surface water resource yield assessments, reliable data, and information. You will be responsible for maintaining hydrometric data for use in water resource investigations, modelling and assessment of resource position. This will include participating in and coordinating hydrometric data gathering field work and occasional travel within the Essex and Suffolk area.

You will play a key role in maintaining awareness of current best practice and advancements in the field of hydrology in support of water resource management activities. You will progress hydrological studies and investigations required to implement water resource schemes; and apply industry wide water resource planning methodologies during periodic reviews.

About you

The successful candidate will have a degree qualification in a relevant subject (including but not limited to Environmental Science, Geography, Hydrology, Civil or Environmental Engineering) and preferably an A-level in Maths. An MSc, in hydrology or related subject is preferred but not essential.

We’re looking for you to collaborate effectively as part of a team, reporting to the Water Resources Team Manager, but also exhibit initiative in working individually on discrete tasks. You will demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write high quality, concise reports to regulatory standards. Therefore, the use of Microsoft Word and Excel (to an intermediate level) for data analysis and reporting is needed. You will have good planning, organisational and time management skills.

Proficiency in the use of field methods including stream gauging, piezometer monitoring and water quality sampling is essential.

You will have awareness of, and preferably experience in the use of specialist surface water hydrological modelling and water resources modelling software (e.g., Aquator®); and familiarity with the use of GIS packages such as ArcGIS.

You’ll be required to have strong numerate and data analysis skills, be comfortable working with, and interpreting, charts, and numbers, with a competency in statistical techniques and probabilistic approaches (e.g., Monte Carlo analysis).

The successful candidate will also have basic knowledge of hydrogeology and will ideally be a member of CIWEM or other relevant professional body.

Here at Essex & Suffolk Water, Diversity, Inclusion and Equity means bringing your full self to work. We encourage and welcome applications from all underrepresented groups, as we believe and strive for community representation within all our teams, structures, and organisation
