Job description

Bournemouth University’s vision is worldwide recognition as a leading university for inspiring learning, advancing knowledge and enriching society through the fusion of education, research and practice. Our highly skilled and creative workforce is comprised of individuals drawn from a broad cross section of the globe, who reflect a variety of backgrounds, talents, perspectives and experiences that help to build our global learning community.

Are you looking to make a big difference to how Bournemouth University manages energy, water and carbon? Do you have an analytical approach and like solving problems? Are you interested in addressing climate change through building management systems, renewable energy solutions and energy efficiency projects? If so, we can offer you a supportive team environment where you can further develop your skills.

You will be working in an established Sustainability team, where we work together with the Facilities Management and Capital Development teams to help BU reduce the environmental impact of our buildings. We have a well embedded approach to environment and energy management with systems accredited to both ISO14001 and ISO50001. This means we have the policies, procedures, and ways of working in place which help us reduce our impacts. The core part of your role is the management and optimisation of the Building Management System (with at least 15 buildings connected) and all operations of the metering and Automatic Meter Reporting systems. This means adjusting settings, to optimise the energy efficiency and thermal comfort of our buildings informed by real-time data from building and space usage.

Your work will directly impact the amount of energy and water used by the University and you will be problem solving and making improvements as you go, this forms part of our evolving Intelligent Campus approach whereby we are striving to further optimise energy and water usage informed by smart enabled systems and sensors. You will be working closely with the Energy and Sustainability Analyst who does the reporting of energy and carbon emissions.

You will have the opportunity to use your skills to identify projects which can increase the amount of renewable energy we can generate on site or improve the efficiency of our energy use whilst also contributing to our Intelligent Campus initiative. You can do research into technologies and bring ideas which you can develop into a business case, supported by the Energy Manager, and present for approval. You will see your ideas come to life and be able to track the resulting energy, water, and carbon savings. This is a satisfying process and a real way you can make a difference to climate action.

You will bring your analytical skills, problem solving ability and passion for sustainability and energy to the role. You can bring these skills from a variety of previous roles, and we will support and train you to develop your skills further. If you have experience of Building Management Systems, Intelligent Campus Platforms or Systems, Metering, IT, Networking or Renewable Energy these skills will help you.
