Reporting to the Director, Water or their designate in our Winnipeg office, the successful candidate will provide research, project management and communications support for the Water Program on aspects of effective and cost-efficient policy development and implementation related to water and its linked sectors with an emphasis on Canada, particularly the Canadian prairies. The successful candidates responsibilities will include:
Conduct research and write reports on issues related to the management and sustainability of freshwater resources, such as in Lake Winnipeg basin management, control of industrial contaminants as well as municipal and agricultural waste.
Undertake analysis and evaluation of policies and programs, such as their objectives, impact and cost-efficiency, incorporating social, economic and environmental considerations.
Keeping up to date regarding emerging issues related to freshwater management and policy priorities in Manitoba and Canada, and providing methodological guidance and conducting research related to current and emerging priorities.
Manage assigned projects, control budgets and supervise IISD staff, associates and external consultants associated with those projects.
Lead in fund raising, project development and proposal writing.
Support the Water Program team’s public engagement and outreach activities by developing and contributing to a range of communications outputs, as well as representing IISD at events.
Assist with the maintenance of IISD’s institutional presence in Manitoba and Canada, including the maintenance of relationships within the government, academia, non-governmental and private sectors.
Contribute to our internal and external reporting requirements.
Perform other duties as assigned.
In depth knowledge of Canadian policy processes, government systems and priorities, preferably with respect to water and natural resources.
Solid understanding of policy evaluation systems, particularly around their impact, costs, and effectiveness.
Expertise and experience in policy research and analysis that demonstrates critical thinking and analytical capacity.
Develop evaluation criteria, methodology and systems and implement them in research studies.
Coordinates efforts of research team.
Prepare, present and communicate high quality research findings to a variety of audiences.
Design, fundraise for and implement and policy-oriented research projects, from start to finish.
Results focused, ability to work under tight deadlines, prioritize tasks and work quickly and accurately.
Positive attitude and ability to work in a diverse, multi-disciplinary and spread out team as well as independently.
Understanding of environmental economics an asset.
At least 8-10 years of relevant work experience in the field of policy research, environmental management or closely related field.
A minimum of a Master’s degree or equivalent in political science, economics, public administration or related discipline.
Excellent written and spoken English. Fluency in French a definite asset.
Availability to travel infrequently within Canada and internationally.
Must be currently eligible to work in Canada.
Salary: $60,000 - $70,000 CAD
